As you walk from the L train to the entrance of the venue, you're transported to a queer utopia as rising music draws you near. It feels like something right out of your imagination; you enter the open concept venue, laser lights flooding the three stages perfectly aligned under the Kosciusko ("K") Bridge in Greenpoint. The two-day festival kicked off with headliners Tinashe and Slayyyter, and the lineup was stacked with DJs warming the crowd up onstage and mixing sets out of a Red Bull party truck.Â
Slayyyter's erotic and electronic set amped the audience up, and everyone was ready to match Tinashe's freak as a large cube was wheeled to the center of the stage for her to dance around. The crowd sang every word as she performed hit after hit, and you couldn't even be sad when it was over, because tomorrow it was happening all over again.Â
Saturday's crowd was overflowing with fans eager to see headliners Arca, Tokischa, and Sevdaliza, as well as rumored guest Madonna. Rain poured down on Tokischa's set as the music washed over
and cleansed the audience like a ritual planned for the show.
Arca performed hypnotically, alternating between swinging over the stage on a leather harness and manipulating a cryo gun. You could feel the reverence in the room as Tokischa rejoined Arca onstage to perform an unreleased song, every audience member listening intently. The whole set felt like a dream come true.
Towards the end of the evening, a vogue ball broke out as houses battled for audience applause and the judging panel's highest scores. When Madonna was revealed as the special guest judge, the audience erupted into cheers. To close out the night, Sevdaliza kept the momentum going with an entrancing DJ set and angelic vocals that filled the venue from floor to ceiling. The cars passing on the highway overhead had no idea what they were missing.Â
The Ladyland Festival, organized by LadyFag, was the perfect way to close out Pride Month 2024, bringing everyone together for two nights filled with action, love, and good music.Â
