Plastic Girl, an artist whose work spans illustrating, sculpting, animation, and music, has crafted an enchanting universe that captivates and invites exploration. We had the pleasure of interviewing Plastic Girl to delve into her latest projects, sources of inspiration, and future artistic ambitions.
Are there any major projects or themes you're currently exploring or planning to explore soon?
I’m currently working on my first album, Flowers for Everyone. I’m working with sculptures, drawings, etc. around the themes of the album. I’ve been working with flower creatures and crows a lot. I’ve also been interested in clocks as a part of my larger interest in looking at the boxes humans inhabit. I think naturally humans are meant to be free-flowing creatures, and the boxes we tend to live in are restricting. Time/daily schedules, relationships, and gender are ideas I like to explore.
If one of your artworks could come to life and exist beyond its original medium, which one would you choose and what do you imagine it would be like in the real world?
I’d probably like one of my animal figures to come to life. It wouldn’t speak, it would probably just follow me around and keep me company. I wouldn’t imagine it to be affectionate, but it would be a curious friend. It would stay with me inside.
I’ve noticed that you work with a diverse range of mediums. Do you have a personal favorite among them for creating, and are there any new mediums you want to explore with in the future?
It changes, but right now I think my favorite is drawing/sketching. It is the easiest way for me to get my ideas and notes down. I always sketch my ideas before working on bigger projects like sculptures or videos. And when I’m making finals from my drawings, I like using digital collage. I use mostly pencil and crayons and cut out different parts of my drawings to make a final digital collage. Performance is a medium I haven’t really gotten to explore, and I think I’d like to do that with other people someday.
What is the most recent dream you remember having, and have any of your artworks been inspired by dreams you've had?
11. I recently had a dream during one of the periods where my days and nights were blending together and I barely had the energy to do anything. I remember stumbling to bed and a version of myself sitting at the edge of my bed caught me in their arms as I fell and put me to sleep. I made a drawing “Don’t be Afraid of The Dark” based on this dream. The title is from one of the songs off of Flowers for Everyone.
